Application description:

Portable school bus lift tables are used with an in-ground chain conveyor. The portable cart lift table is required as part of the assembly line of school buses. The chain conveyor transfers the cart lift table from one end of the assembly line to the other end. This open space allows access to the center of the assembly line and to the shipping docks.

In-ground Chain Conveyor

A school bus assembly line is much larger than your typical vehicle assembly line. As with all vehicle assembly lines the floor plan must allow access to both sides of the line in order to keep supplies stocked and accessible. The way this is achieved for this bus assembly line is to use portable lifts with an in-ground chain conveyor. As the bus reaches the end of the conveyor the skid and the bus is lifted up from the conveyor. The portable cart lift transfers the bus from the home position as the in-ground chain conveyor pulls the cart lift with skid and bus to the secondary position. This secondary position is the next section of the assembly line conveyor. The air activated limit switch then charges the poppet valves plumbed to the manifold of the lift table and exhausts the air from the air bags and lowers the lift. While the lift is lowering it places the skid along with the bus onto the conveyor. At this point in time the chain conveyor now reverses and pulls the cart lift back to the home position and re-docks with the air docking station in order to ready itself for the next bus to be transported.

Portable Lift Tables

By utilizing the portable lift table system the buses can be picked and placed which allows a clear path to the internal side of the assembly line. This feature is similar to the way a draw bridge functions to allow ship traffic to flow when the bridge is up and car traffic to flow when the bridge is down. With this portable bus lift fork trucks can freely travel to the internal side of the line to deliver components for assembly and the busses can freely travel from one end of the assembly line to the beginning of the assembly line.

Air Docking Station for Lift Tables

An air docking station was designed and built to charge the portable lift table at the home position. The air docking station connects the in house airlines to the Herkules cart lift table. When the bus is positioned above the lift table on the conveyor a signal tells the lift controls to raise and remove the bus from the conveyor. At the time the lift is docked at the home position the air also charges an air reservoir. This air reservoir is used in conjunction with a limit switch signal at the secondary position for the down cycle.

Application description:

Triple scissor lift table system used with a chain conveyor mounted both above floor and below floor level for right angle transfer of school buses.

Right Angle Conveyor Transfer

This right angle transfer scissor lift table conveyor application utilizes many of the features of the Herkules pneumatic lift tables. The right angle transfer lift system was placed in the body shop department of the assembly line of the buses. It is important to not have any contaminants such as oil or silica used in the lifting mechanism. These types of materials effect quality of paint coatings. Because of this Thomas Built Bus asked Herkules to manufacture a 100% air operated scissor lift table system for use with the conveyor assembly line.

School Bus Conveyor Lift System

As mentioned the scissor lift tables are used in the paint booth and they raise and lower all the various sizes of busses, the largest beginning at 20,000 pounds (9072 kg) which included a full length skid with one bus. The lift system moves the busses up and down to transfer them from the chain conveyor at 90 degrees to the main conveyor. The lifts cycle full up to pick up a skid and bus then transfer it 90 degrees across to the other paint line. Once it reaches the other paint line, approximately 100 ft (30.5m) away, another lift lowers the skid and bus to the paint line. Then the skid and bus travels back in the direction it came from so additional processing can take place.

Conveyor Lift Tables

The right angle transfer scissor lift table conveyor system cycle speed is 5 seconds up and 5 seconds down. The lift is automated to cycle by proximity switches that sense the position of the lift table. The paint conveyor line utilizes bar codes on the skid for identifying the school bus style and position with in the factory. The scissor lift table conveyor is designed to work with the small bus frame that holds 30 passengers up to the larger bus frame that holds 90 passengers.

Application description:

Position parts for the operator to pick and place in a work cell of a high volume-machining center.

High-speed power turntables are commonly used in high volume machining centers. For this application the turntable has a high speed scissor lift table mounted on the deck. The combination of the high-speed rotation of the turntable and the high speed vertical travel of the scissor lift table ensures that the machining center runs at maximum efficacy.

Work cell Power Turntable

The high-speed work cell power turntable helps to minimize the operator’s movements when loading and unloading the parts from the machining centers. Thus the optimal ergonomic movements are achieved. The speed of the power rotate can be as fast as 8 seconds for 180 degrees and the speed for the scissor lift table can be as fast as 5 seconds up and 5 seconds down. Automotive assembly line large rack of parts needed to be tilted and positioned for the operator to pick from the best ergonomic position.

This lift and tilt table has a large foot print to accommodate parts racks. The large foot print is achieved by placing two tilt table systems side by side and placing a common top plate over both of them. The Herkules tilt system is unique to the market place. Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA)

When it came time to display the Herkules low profile scissor lift tables at the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) trade show (www.mhia.org) we decided to engineer and build a mountain of pneumatic controlled lift tables. The air lift table mountain design utilized the Herkules original four scissor low profile lift table. When it came time to paint the mountain we choose multiple colors with spray enamel paint. The scissor lift tables were plumbed together to automatically cycle up and down during the trade show. The controls used a 4 inch (102 mm) diameter air manifold with poppet valve signaled by a whisker switch in the fully raised position, and a whisker switch in the fully lowered position.

The air lift tables were a show stopper. Everyone attending the trade show wanted to see the system operate. It was clear that Herkules was the expert scissor lift table manufacturer. The single lift table at the top of the mountain was controlled using high speed –high volume valves, manifold and hoses. This lift was capable of cycling at an amazing speed of 3 seconds up and 5 seconds down.

Staging system for racks of parts for an assembly line feed. This staging system maximizes operator up time.

A power turntable is one of three types of equipment commonly used to queue product for use in many applications such as manufacturing, assembly and warehousing.

In order to choose which system is best for your application it is best to consider these factors:

1. The size of the product or parts

For large parts power turntables and over-and under conveyor systems are typically used. For small parts any of the three systems is suitable

2. The floor space

For 2 position systems over-and-under conveyor systems and side-by-side conveyor systems take up the least amount of floor space. For multi-position systems both the over-and-under and side-by-side conveyor systems take up a large foot print size.

3. The volume of the product in terms of quantity

For low volume applications power turntables with 2 positions is commonly used. For high volume applications 4 position turntables along with both the other systems are used.

4. Price point

A manually activated side-by-side system is the least expensive way to queue product. If the system must be automated to maximize the efficacy of the operator then power turntables can be the most economical option. For a fully automated system the most expensive is the over-and-under system.

For this application, using the above criteria, we chose the Herkules 2-position power turntable. We chose this type of system in part due to the size of the part (medium size part), the small footprint of the system installed (122 inch (3099 mm) swing radius) and the quantity of the parts picked and placed in the rack (moved 2 racks per day).

Adjustable Walk-in Rack Lift Tables with Counterweights

Application description:

Large walk-in rack positioning for high production assembly line, fabrication stations and machining centers. The lift table is used to raise and lower the rack to the most optimal ergonomic working height so the operator can pick and place component parts.

For this application the top plate (platform) of the scissor lift table was modified to match the foot print of the rack. This allows the operator to walk into the rack and pick up or place the part thus minimizing the chances of a repetitive strain injury (RSI). As the dunnage rack levels are filled or emptied the Herkules scissor lift table can be raised to the most accommodating working height for the operator. The Herkules engineers customized the scissor lift tables to have counterweights. The counterweight is placed opposite the cut out in the platform. This counterweighed measure allows the lift to accommodate the large cantilever and moment arm effects placed on the lift during operation of the up down cycles related to the offset loads.

Large Dunnage Part Racks

As just-in-time JIT and globalization are shaping our manufacturing and assembly plants more and more dunnage racks are used to accommodate larger and larger parts. Engineers apply many ergonomic principles while designing the workstation and the means to handling the parts. For lighter, larger parts we have seen that large dunnage part racks work well.

Assembly line side operator lift. Used to raise and lower an operator to the most optimal ergonomic working height.

For this operator platform lift application we utilized the Herkules low profile pneumatic scissor lift tables. The pneumatic controlled operator lift is raised and lowered to place the operator at the correct ergonomic working height for performing the task.

The operator platform lift is used to bring the operator to the work as opposed to bringing the work to the operator like most applications. The lift’s raised height is adjusted for each operator stature. Therefore as the time shift change takes place and a variety of workers with varying heights enter the work area, the heights are easily accommodated. When the operator work platform is adjusted the operator can now be the most efficient with the least possibility of developing a repetitive strain injury (RSI). Operator platform lifts are essential for all high production assembly line and manufacturing facilities.

Repetitive Strain Injury Prevention

More and more companies are realizing that the closer the operator can be positioned to the work area the chance of a RSI is reduced. Operator work platform lifts are one of the most effective ways to prevent RSI’s. When the operator is moved to the optimal work height regardless of the height of the operator then this can save the company money by reducing RSI’s and improving safety and efficiency.

Worker Platform Lifts

Worker platform lifts range in size (length x width) from small 2 ft x 2 ft (610 mm x 610 mm) to large 10 ft x 100 ft (3048 mm x 30480 mm). The lowered height and raised height can be from floor level to 30 ft (9144 mm). For this mining material handling application the low profile pneumatic system provided by Herkules air bag technology works well. The customer decided that the Herkules air powered, low profile scissor lift table was best for this application due to availability of air, cleanliness of air, low maintenance of the lift system in a harsh environment, and the lift’s low profile when it is collapsed.

Triple Stacked Scissor Lift Tables

This material handling scissor lift application required the system to raise and lower 6000 pounds (2722 kg). The lowered height of the scissor lift table needed to be as low as possible to interface with other equipment. The Herkules triple stacked scissor lift tables have an unmatched lowered height of 12 inches (305 mm) and a raised height of 82 inches (2083 mm) which provides 75 inches (1905 mm) of travel. This is achieved by utilizing the Herkules original designed 4 scissor lift table combined with the Herkules low profile air bag technology.

For this pneumatic material handling system, we used compressed air from a central compressor. The air line pressure was held at a constant rating between 80 psi to 120 psi (5.5 bar to 8.3 bar). The air bag is rated as a low pressure system at a maximum pressure of 51 psi (3.5 bar).

Adjustable Work Platforms

Application description:

Adjustable work platform is used for production assembly of component parts to vehicles

This adjustable work platform utilizes two Herkules direct lifting scissor lift tables. A hand control mounted on the hand railing allows the operator to manually adjust the height of the scissor lift tables to the desired work height. The lift can be lowered to a height of 21 inches (533 mm) or raised to a height of 46 inches (1168 mm). The lifts are placed on two independent risers which are 12.5 inches (318 mm) tall. The overall length of the platform is 216 inches (5486 mm) with the width being 54 inches (1371 mm).

Operator Lift Safety Features

The hand railing was welded in place and manufactured to meet all Occupation Health and Safety Standards (OSHA). The hand railing height was reduced at one end to allow for clearance for the vehicle axles. The adjustable work platform has toe kick around the full perimeter except for one end where the gate is located. One end of the adjustable work platform has a fixed height deck that is independent from the lift system. This fixed height deck has steps on each side which are used to enter the adjustable work platform. A chain gate is used for safety when the lift system is in the raised position. The hand railing, chain gate and toe kick help to keep the operator safe and allows the operator to focus on the job and not be concerned about stepping in the wrong place which could lead to an injury.

The adjustable work platform risers and fixed platform are equipped with 12 quantity floor anchor holes to lag the system to the floor.
